Pulse FAQ

Is Pulse required to use Deadline?

Pulse is not required to use Deadline, it simply improves Deadline's performance, and enables you to use the Power Management feature. If you are running more than 100 slaves, it is recommended that you run Pulse on your Deadline Repository machine.

What happens if Pulse is shutdown or terminated?

When Pulse is not running, the Slaves themselves check for jobs in the Repository. So if Pulse is shutdown or terminated for any reason, Deadline will continue to function as normal, but without the performance boost. This maintains the level of robustness that users of Deadline have become accustomed to.

Can I run Pulse on any machine in my farm?

Technically, you can run Pulse on any machine in your farm, but running it on the Deadline Repository machine keeps most of the File IO local and results in the best performance boost.

If I'm running Pulse on the Deadline Repository machine, can I use the local path to the repository instead of the network shared path?

Yes, and this is actually recommended, as it keeps most of the File IO local and results in the best performance boost.

Can I still use the Power Management feature if I don't want Pulse to act as a proxy between the Slaves and the Deadline Repository?

Yes. If you wish to make use of this feature without having Pulse act as a proxy between the slaves and the repository, simply leave the Pulse Host Name Or IP Address setting blank in the Deadline Pulse Settings, and run Pulse on any machine you choose.

If Pulse is shutdown or terminated, is the Power Management feature still functional?

In this case, the only aspect of Power Management that is still functional is the Temperature Checking. Redundancy for Temperature checking has been built into the Slave application, so if Pulse isn't running, you're still protected if the temperature in your farm room begins to rise.

Which temperature sensors work with Power Management?

The sensors we use at Frantic Films are NetTherms, and APC Sensors are also known to be compatible. Basically, as long as the temperature sensors use SNMP, and you know it's OID (which is configurable in Deadline), it should work.
