Biography – Mark Wiebe, Director of Research and Development

Mark Wiebe

As the head of Frantic's R&D efforts, Mark has built the department with an emphasis on a strong research culture and a commitment to building software that artists love to use. Mark has driven the creation of proprietary software such as Flood, Krakatoa, Deadline, Amaretto and Flood: Surf – all of which have shown demonstrable results in major motion picture projects, while addressing the needs of industry professionals.

In his daily work, Mark draws on a solid knowledge of mathematics and software development. He honed these fundamentals at the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Joint Honours degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. At the time, Mark was awarded the Governor General's Silver Medal for having the highest standing in the university – a cumulative GPA of 4.48. These statistics made a big impression on the Frantic Films team, who hired Mark directly out of school in 2001. As Frantic's first software developer, Mark built partnerships with organizations such as the National Research Council of Canada in pursuit of the industry's cutting edge.

In 2005, Mark was bestowed with the U of M's Faculty of Science Graduate Achievement in Industry Award. The award is given to science graduates who make the most significant contribution to the mission of their company.
